The W208 Mercedes-Benz CLK55 AMG has to be one of the most undervalued classic cars on the market. Armed with the formidable (and reliable) hand assembled 5.4 litre V8 engine, the big coupe has been overlooked in the modern classic movement.
The W208/W210 E Class platform of the late 1990s and early 2000s came from a time when Mercedes-Benz had taken their eye off the ball in terms of quality. Cars built in this era, particularly the W208 CLK, W210 E Class and W202 C Class suffered terrible rust issues, which started at the arches and marched quickly through most of the bodywork.
For this reason, Merc’s of this era seem to all make pennies when it comes to used values… which means a well looked after and presentable car can really be a bargain.
The 5.4 litre V8 naturally aspirated engine found in this CLK55 really is a fantastic powerplant. It harks back to the days when an AMG car from Mercedes-Benz was understated, even subtle. The 5.4 litre V8 found itself into the E Class Saloon and Estate, CLK Coupe and Convertible and a small number of C Class Saloons and Estates… The latter being the rarest.
Low prices are probably kept that way thanks to the general perception that rust kills all Mercs from the early 2000s, and of course a real world economy figure of 13-18mpg. Buyers think that with big engines come big bills, but the 5.4 litre V8 engine is one of the most reliable and dependable units that AMG ever produced. Add to that the fact that many specialists can maintain these cars and an older AMG is a practical proposition.
We’ve seen these CLK55 AMGs end on auction sites for £1500-3000… a pocket money rocket ship with heated seats. Everyone’s a winner.
This one has 132,000 miles on the clock and what looks like an honest description.

Go on, get yourself a V8. You’ll love it.
